Anfang September habe ich in "Great Dixter House, Gardens & Nurseries" angefangen. Der Garten liegt in Northiam, East Sussex, etwa eine halbe Stunde noerdlich von Hastings.

Great Dixter ist ein altes Gut mit einem Herrenhaus und diversen Farmgebaeuden und wurde bereits im Mittelalter errichtet. 1910 kaufte die Familie Lloyd das Gut, der juengste Sohn Christopher lebte hier bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 2006.



Nursery

Die verschiedenen Gaerten sind alle um das Haus herum angeordnet. Es gibt u.a. einen "Blauen Garten", einen "Versunkenen Garten", den "Pfauengarten", in dem Hecken in Pfauenform wachsen, den "Exotischen Garten" und einen Gemuesegarten. Dazu kommen noch diverse Wiesen mit Obstbaeumen. Alle Gaerten sind sehr dicht bepflanzt und bluehen derzeit noch wunderschoen.

Untergebracht bin ich in der ehemaligen Dixter Farm, die ich mir mit zwei weiteren Studenten teile. Ich schlafe in einem ehemaligen Melkstall :-) Alles ist ganz frisch renoviert, so dass ich mich hier sehr wohlfuehle. 



Exotic Garden

eng: At the beginning of September I started working at Great Dixter House, Gardens & Nurseries. The garden is situated in Northiam, East Sussex about half a hour from Hastings. 

Great Dixter is a old manor with lots of barns and farmbuildings which was erected in the middle age. In 1910 the family Lloyd bought the manor, the youngest son Christopher lived here until he died in 2006. 

The different gardens lie all around the house. There are f.e. the Blue Garden, the Sunk Garden, the Peacock Garden, the Exotic Garden and a Vegetable Garden. There are also lots of meadows with fruit trees. All gardens are really densely planted and are still in full flower. I live together with two other students in Dixter Farm. I sleep in the previous cow shed. Everything is fresh renovated and I feel really good here.               

Loch Ness and Glasgow

Urquart Castle

Die naechste Station meiner Schottlandreise war Fort Augustus am beruehmten Loch Ness. Ich hatte einen super sonnigen warmen Tag und habe das Urquart Castel besichtig, das direkt am See liegt. Hinzu bin ich mit dem Bus gefahren und zurueck dann 18 Meilen gewandert. Ich bin dem Great Glen Weg gefolgt, auf dem man von Inverness bis Fort William (ca. 106 km) wandern kann  und hatte von den umliegenden Bergen aus einen herrlichen Blick auf den See.

eng: The next station of my Scotland journey was Fort Augustus at the famous Loch Ness. I had a reall sunny day and visited Urquart Castle which is situated directly at the lake. I took the bus to reach the castle but the way back I walked about 18 miles. I followed the Great Glen Way which connects Inverness with Fort William (about 106 km). From the mountains I had a marvellous view over the see.  

Nach meinem Besuch am Loch Ness habe ich die Highlands wieder verlassen und bin nach Glasgow gefahren. Das Stadtzentrum erinnert mit seinen vielen Einkaufsstrassen, Passagaen und all den Bussen und Taxis stark an London (war zumindest mein Eindruck) Glasgow ist im 18. und 19. Jhd. durch Baumwoll- und Tabakhandel sowie durch den Schiffsbau zu grossem Reichtum gekommen. Daher die wunderschoenen, prunkvollen Gebaeude in der Innenstadt. Die Stadtgebiete am  Fluss Clyde, wo sich frueher die Werften und die Arbeiterviertel befunden haben sind allerdings noch ziemlich runtergekommen. In den letzten Jahren hat man dort mit Neubau begonnen und es sind ein paar sehr moderne Gebaede wie z.B. das neue "Riverside Museum" entstanden.

Ich habe mir in Glasgow wegen des schlechten Wetters viele der Museen angesehen und mich ausfuehrlich ueber die Stadtgeschichte und das Leben im alten Glasgow informiert :-) War sehr interessant. 

eng: After my visit to Loch Ness I left the Highlands and went to Glasgow. The city center with all it's shopping streets an all the traffic reminded me of London. Glasgow became very rich in the 18th and 19th century because of trade in tobacco and cotton and shipbuilding. That's why there are so many beautiful and magnificent buildings in the inner city. The areas along the river Clyde where the shipyards had been and all the workpeople lived were really run down. In the last years Glasgow started developing this area and a lot of really modern buildings like the new "Riverside Museum" were constructed.

Because of the bad weather I visited in Glasgow lots of museums and learned much about the history of the city and the life in Old Glasgow which has been really interesting.
